Mistral AI Raises €3 Billion in the Largest European Tech Funding Round Ever
Paris-based Mistral AI has raised €3 billion in a Series D round led by Samsung Electronics, alongside co-leads Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and existing investor PSG Equity, valuing the company at more than €21 billion. New investors include Advent, funds managed by BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, while existing backers a16z, ASML, General Catalyst, Lightspeed, NVIDIA, and Salesforce Ventures all returned.
Nearly Doubling a Valuation Set Just a Year Earlier
The new valuation is close to double the €11.7 billion Mistral reached in its previous fundraising round roughly a year earlier, a pace of appreciation that places it among the fastest-growing AI companies in Europe. Chief executive Arthur Mensch told reporters the fresh capital will go toward building and owning data centers directly, alongside renting additional computing capacity, a dual strategy aimed at securing the compute Mistral needs without depending entirely on third-party cloud providers. Owning infrastructure outright, rather than renting all of it from hyperscale cloud providers, is a capital-heavy path few AI labs outside the very largest US players have attempted, and Mistral's decision to pursue it signals real confidence in sustained, long-term compute demand rather than a shorter-term training run.
A Deliberately European Investor Syndicate
The round's structure carries a clear strategic signal beyond its size: Samsung's leadership alongside a European-focused fund managed by EQT and direct participation from the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg reflects a deliberate effort to build a European-anchored capital base for what is being positioned as Europe's answer to the largest US and Chinese AI labs. That framing, sovereign AI capability funded substantially by European and allied Asian capital, has become an increasingly explicit theme in how the largest AI rounds outside the US are being structured and marketed. A national government taking a direct stake in a private AI lab, as Luxembourg has done here, remains unusual outside of dedicated sovereign wealth vehicles, and it underscores how seriously European policymakers now treat frontier AI capability as strategic national infrastructure rather than purely a commercial venture bet.
What This Means for Founders
Mistral's round demonstrates that European AI companies with genuine technical differentiation can now access funding rounds at a scale that used to be almost exclusively available to US-based labs, provided they can build an investor syndicate that combines strategic corporate capital, sovereign interest, and returning venture backers.
