Zeit AI Raises EUR 5M to Build Europe's Autonomous Data Engineer

Munich-based Zeit AI has closed a EUR 5 million funding round with participation from Y Combinator, the University of Oxford's Seed Fund, the Sequoia Capital Scout Fund, ACE Ventures, and Hasso Plattner VC, alongside a group of individual angels including former German Federal Minister of Finance Christian Lindner, World Cup winner Mario Götze, and Helsing CTO Robert Fink.

What Zeit AI Builds

Founded in 2024 by Palantir alumni Leopold von Waldthausen and Marvin Bornstein, Zeit AI is building what it calls the autonomous data engineer for Europe's mid-market. Its product, ZeitMind, connects to ERP, CRM, and more than 600 other source systems, using an AI agent to automatically build analytics-ready applications from that connected data, work that would traditionally require a dedicated data engineering team to assemble manually. Automating that traditionally manual, specialist-heavy workflow directly targets a persistent bottleneck for mid-market companies that have real operational data spread across many systems but lack the budget or headcount to hire a dedicated data engineering team to unify it.

Why This Round Matters

Targeting the European mid-market specifically, rather than large enterprises or the broader SMB segment, positions Zeit AI in a segment that is often underserved by both expensive enterprise data infrastructure vendors and simpler no-code tools not built for genuine data engineering complexity. A Y Combinator-backed team with Palantir data-engineering pedigree building specifically for this gap is a notable combination: deep technical credibility applied to a market segment that has real budget but has historically lacked purpose-built tooling. Connecting to more than 600 source systems out of the gate is also a significant integration investment for a company this early, suggesting the founders prioritized breadth of connectivity as a core product requirement rather than a later feature to bolt on.

What This Means for Founders

Founders building infrastructure or data tooling for the mid-market, rather than defaulting to an enterprise-first or SMB-first go-to-market, should note Zeit AI's positioning as a reminder that the mid-market segment, often overlooked in favor of flashier enterprise logos or higher-volume SMB plays, can be a genuine wedge for a well-targeted product. The unusually broad and high-profile angel syndicate backing this round, spanning politics, sports, and technology, also illustrates how European deep-tech and AI infrastructure companies are increasingly able to draw prominent individual backers beyond traditional venture capital, a distribution and credibility asset smaller funding rounds can still access.
