StandardX Raises £10 Million to Build a UK Isotope Refinery

StandardX, a London-based deeptech company, has raised £10 million in seed funding led by Vsquared Ventures and East X Ventures, with participation from firstminute capital, UKI2S, Brevan Howard Macro Venture, and Geometry. The company is building an accelerator-based isotope refinery to increase production of rare isotopes used in both medical treatment and fusion energy research.

Founded in 2025 by CEO Richard Pearson and CTO Ross Allen, both nuclear engineers with prior experience scaling startups, StandardX is targeting a supply gap that has become an increasing concern across both the medical and energy sectors: rare isotopes used in advanced cancer therapies and next-generation fusion reactor designs are currently produced by a small number of aging nuclear reactors and research facilities worldwide, creating a fragile, geopolitically concentrated supply chain for materials that hospitals and energy researchers increasingly depend on. The funding will be used to grow the team, secure StandardX's first industrial site in London, and advance the design and construction of its first accelerator-based isotope refinery system.

An accelerator-based approach, rather than relying on a traditional nuclear reactor, is a notable technical choice: particle accelerators can produce certain medical and research isotopes without the same regulatory and safety burden as reactor-based production, potentially allowing a company like StandardX to bring new isotope production capacity online faster and in more locations than a conventional nuclear facility would permit, though accelerator-based methods also come with their own cost and scale tradeoffs that the company will need to prove out at commercial volume.

The involvement of Brevan Howard Macro Venture, the venture arm of a major macro hedge fund, alongside more traditional deeptech investors like Vsquared Ventures, points to growing financial-sector interest in critical materials and supply chain resilience as an investable theme in its own right, distinct from pure climate or medical technology categories, as investors increasingly treat supply chain fragility in strategic materials as a standalone macro risk worth positioning against.

Both founders' nuclear engineering backgrounds, rather than a purely commercial or financial pedigree, are likely central to how investors are underwriting the technical risk in this seed round. Isotope production sits at the intersection of nuclear physics, radiochemistry, and industrial-scale manufacturing, a combination of expertise that is comparatively rare outside of national laboratories and established nuclear operators, and a founding team with direct experience scaling complex technical operations gives early backers a clearer basis for confidence than a purely first-time founding team might in a category this specialized.
