River Mobility Raises $120M Backed by Toyota and Yamaha to Electrify India's Roads

The largest legacy motorcycle manufacturers in the world are now writing checks to the startup competing with them.

River Mobility, the Bangalore-based electric two-wheeler startup founded by Aravind Mani in 2021, has raised $120 million in a Series C round led by Elev8 Venture Partners and Claypond Capital. Existing backers Yamaha Motor, Al-Futtaim Group, and Mitsui participated alongside new investors including Singularity AMC, Anicut Capital, 360 ONE Asset, and HDFC AMC.

The Yamaha and Toyota participation is the headline within the headline. Both are incumbents whose core business is manufacturing the two-wheelers that River is replacing with electric alternatives. Their decision to fund the competition rather than fight it reflects a calculation that the EV transition in India is no longer a question of if but when, and that backing the fastest-growing native EV brand is a better position than losing the transition entirely.

River plans to use the capital to fund battery management system R&D, build its third manufacturing facility, and expand its corporate retail network to more than 350 showrooms by 2028. The $120M is entirely primary equity capital, with no secondary sales and less than 12% venture debt.

India's electric two-wheeler market is growing faster than any other EV segment in the country, competing with both legacy manufacturers Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor and newer entrants like Ather Energy and Ola Electric. River is positioning itself as the premium domestic alternative in a market where the right combination of range, reliability, and retail footprint will determine category leadership.

What this means for founders

Strategic capital from incumbents has become standard, not exceptional, in emerging market mobility. When Yamaha backs a startup directly competing with its own product line, it signals that the category shift is locked in. For founders in climate tech, emerging market mobility, or advanced manufacturing, this round is evidence that the most relevant question is no longer whether incumbents will participate — it is whether you are positioned to receive that capital when they decide to move.
