mika Raises 6 Million Euros to Reinvent Tax and Accounting for German Small Businesses

Berlin-based mika closed a €6 million seed round led by pan-European investor Smedvig Ventures, with participation from Basel-based family office Wecken & Cie., along with individual backers Dennis Bemmann, Michael Brehm, Johannes Ditterich and Martina Pfeifer, while existing investors Keen Venture Partners and Dutch Founders Fund increased their stakes in the round.

The company is building what it describes as an AI-native financial operating system for small and mid-sized businesses, specifically targeting the GmbH and UG company structures common among small German limited companies. Rather than positioning itself as a tool that sits alongside a traditional tax adviser, mika manages ongoing bookkeeping, VAT returns, annual accounts and tax filings directly, aiming to make the traditional external tax adviser relationship optional for the small business owners it serves rather than a permanent recurring cost.

Why Germany's Tax and Accounting Complexity Is the Actual Opportunity

Germany's small business accounting and tax compliance system is notoriously complex relative to other European markets, with strict, detailed requirements around VAT filing, annual accounts and bookkeeping that traditionally require an ongoing relationship with a certified tax adviser, a recurring cost that scales poorly for the smallest businesses. mika's bet is that AI can now handle enough of that compliance workload directly, with an accountant still in the loop for oversight rather than for every individual filing, to meaningfully reduce that ongoing cost for the exact segment of the market least able to absorb it. That combination, a genuinely complex regulatory market and a customer base price-sensitive enough that removing a recurring adviser fee is a real value proposition rather than a marginal convenience, is what separates this from a generic AI bookkeeping tool.

What This Means for Founders

mika's raise is a useful reference point for any founder building AI tooling meant to replace, rather than merely assist, an existing professional services relationship. The company chose a market where the underlying task, tax and compliance filing, is both highly structured and legally consequential enough that full automation without human oversight would be a hard sell to either regulators or customers, and its "accountant in the loop" framing appears designed specifically to navigate that trust gap rather than promise full automation it cannot yet safely deliver. A founder building AI tools aimed at replacing an established professional service should study that positioning choice closely: promising to eliminate the professional's fee while keeping a human in the loop for oversight is a materially easier sell than promising full automation on day one, even when the underlying technology capability might eventually support the more aggressive claim.
