Integral Raises €18 Million to Deliver AI-Run Accounting to European SMEs
Integral, a Berlin-based accounting technology company, has raised €18 million in a Series A round co-led by Mosaic Ventures and Reid Hoffman, bringing the company's total funding to more than €30 million. Existing investors Cherry Ventures, General Catalyst, and Puzzle Ventures also participated.
Founded in 2024 by Lukas Zörner and Anil Can Baykal, Integral combines AI agents with licensed accounting professionals to deliver accounting, tax, and payroll services directly to small and medium-sized businesses, starting in Germany. Rather than selling software to accounting and tax professionals, as most companies in the category do, Integral positions itself as an AI-native alternative to hiring a traditional accounting firm outright.
A founder with direct experience in the exact problem being solved
Zörner's background gives the company an unusually specific edge: he co-founded Penta, which grew to 50,000 customers, and later took on management of Qonto's German operations following Qonto's 2022 acquisition of Penta. That trajectory, building a fintech product for German SMEs, then running post-acquisition operations for one of Europe's largest neobanks, gave Zörner direct, ground-level exposure to exactly the accounting and back-office pain points Integral now sells against, a level of founder-market fit that likely factored into Reid Hoffman's decision to back the round personally. Co-founder Anil Can Baykal rounds out the team with the technical build, pairing Zörner's operator background in SME fintech with the product and engineering depth needed to actually ship an AI-native accounting service rather than simply identify the opportunity.
What this means for founders
Integral's model, AI agents plus licensed professionals delivering a service directly rather than software sold to professionals, is a structure increasingly showing up across categories where the end customer wants an outcome, not a tool: legal, accounting, payroll, and compliance are all seeing a wave of companies making this same bet. For European founders building in professional services categories specifically, Integral's approach of embedding licensed expertise alongside AI automation, rather than betting AI alone can fully replace regulated professional judgment, offers a template for building trust with SME customers who need both speed and accountability from a service provider. Starting in Germany before expanding elsewhere in Europe is itself a deliberate choice: Germany's accounting and tax rules are dense enough that solving them credibly there provides a strong proof point before tackling other, differently regulated European markets.
