Clastix Raises EUR 2.9 Million as Mistral AI Backs Its Own Kubernetes Infrastructure Vendor

Clastix, a Naples-based Kubernetes infrastructure company, has raised EUR 2.9 million, roughly $3.1 million, in its first external funding round, a Seed led by CDP Venture Capital Sgr, with participation from Mistral AI and Vertis SGR through its Vertis Venture 6 Digital Sud fund, backed by EU Next-Generation funding. The round was announced September 24, 2026.

What Clastix Builds

Founded in 2020 by Adriano Pezzuto and Dario Tranchitella, Clastix builds two connected products. Kamaji is an open-source Hosted Control Plane engine for Kubernetes, staying Apache 2.0 licensed, that lets organizations run many lightweight Kubernetes control planes efficiently on shared infrastructure rather than provisioning a full, resource-heavy control plane for every cluster. kMetal is the commercial layer on top, a fleet management and governance platform for running Kubernetes at scale across many clusters simultaneously.

An Investor That Is Also a Customer

The most notable detail in this round is not the check size, it is that lead investor Mistral AI is also a customer. Mistral co-founder and CTO Timothee Lacroix said Clastix technology underpins Mistral's own Kubernetes infrastructure for AI training and inference workloads, meaning the company backing Clastix financially has already put its technology into production for some of the most demanding compute workloads in the AI industry. That combination, a frontier AI lab both using and investing in the same infrastructure vendor, is a stronger validation signal than a financial-only backer could provide.

Why Kubernetes Fleet Management Matters for AI Infrastructure

As AI labs and enterprises scale training and inference workloads across increasingly large and heterogeneous compute fleets, managing hundreds or thousands of Kubernetes clusters reliably becomes a genuine operational bottleneck, distinct from simply having enough raw compute. A platform that keeps the underlying control-plane engine open source while monetizing the governance and fleet-management layer on top is a well-established open-core model, and Mistral's direct production dependency on Kamaji suggests the underlying technology already performs at demanding real-world scale.

A EU-Backed Regional Capital Story

Vertis SGR's participation through a fund backed by EU Next-Generation funding, alongside CDP Venture Capital Sgr, a state-linked Italian venture platform, reflects continued European public-capital interest in backing homegrown infrastructure companies that can compete with primarily US-based cloud and infrastructure tooling vendors, particularly in strategically important categories like AI compute infrastructure.

What This Means for Founders

For founders building developer infrastructure or platform tooling, Clastix's round underscores a durable go-to-market pattern: landing a demanding, technically sophisticated customer early, one willing to invest in the vendor after depending on the product, can be a more powerful signal to future investors and customers than almost any other form of validation. It also reflects that Southern Europe's infrastructure and AI tooling ecosystem, often overshadowed by hubs in Northern Europe and the US, is producing companies capable of winning genuinely global-caliber customers.
