Base Power Raises $1 Billion at $13 Billion Valuation to Save the Grid One Home Battery at a Time

The US power grid is aging. AI data centers are straining it further. Base Power's answer is not to build more grid — it is to turn every home into a grid node.

The Austin-based energy storage company announced a $1 billion Series D at a $13 billion post-money valuation on August 3. The round was led by Ribbit, Addition, and Valor Equity Partners, with J.P. Morgan's Strategic Investment Group, Altimeter, D1 Capital Partners, Coatue, a16z, Lightspeed, Thrive Capital, CapitalG, and others participating. Base has now raised over $2.5 billion in total capital.

Alongside the round, the company launched Base Core: a 39.2 kWh home battery designed and manufactured in Austin, Texas. At nearly 40 kWh of storage per unit, it is one of the largest home batteries on the market. The pitch is straightforward: install Base Core at residential scale, aggregate the distributed storage into a virtual power plant, and use that capacity to stabilize the grid during peak demand while giving homeowners backup power and lower bills.

The round positions Base Power as the best-funded residential energy storage company in the US, ahead of competitors in the home battery market and attracting the kind of multi-stage investors — Ribbit, a16z, CapitalG — typically associated with enterprise software, not hardware.

What this means for founders

Base Power is doing something specific that is worth studying: it turned a hardware company into a grid infrastructure play. The home battery is the product. The virtual power plant is the business model. If you are building in climate tech or energy, the question is not whether the hardware works — it is what asset the hardware creates at scale. Base Power's $13 billion valuation is a direct reflection of the grid asset, not the battery.
