Why Are So Few Fund Filings Tagged By Sector, Even When the Data Improves?

Of the 171 fund vehicles that filed on September 23, 15 carried a specific sector label rather than a generalist or deal-by-deal designation, 8.77% of the day. That is a meaningfully larger share than the 3.6% recorded the prior session, and the tagged filings this time span a genuinely wider set of categories: five in Fintech / Crypto / Web3, three in Real Estate / PropTech, three in Biotech / Life Sciences, two in Energy / Climate, one in AI / ML, and one in Space / Aerospace / Defense. Even so, more than 91% of the day's vehicles still carried no meaningful sector information at all, a reminder that a better day for sector tagging is still a long way from a data field anyone can rely on comprehensively.

The five Fintech / Crypto / Web3 filings are the largest tagged category today and worth naming individually: Thomas McLaughlin's Coral DeFi entities (a $25.45 million LTD and a $19.36 million LP, another genuine two-vehicle split with differing figures in the spirit of Article 2's Lionstone story), Todd Thurgood's Global Fintech Venture Fund I ($25.3 million) and Stena FintechX Studio Fund I ($1.865 million), and Ali Noman Khan's zero-dollar Liquid Token Fund. Real Estate / PropTech includes today's largest single filing, Neil M. Abraham's $1.7384 billion Realty Income vehicle covered in Article 1, alongside Careina Williams's $262.12 million Caro Real Estate Credit Fund and a smaller $4.5 million Hilane Realty Fund.

Venture capital specifically, the category where sector focus arguably matters most for a founder deciding who to approach, also improved from yesterday's showing: six of the day's 62 venture vehicles carried a specific sector tag, 9.68%, up from just one of 60 the prior session. Those six span Fintech / Crypto / Web3 (Global Fintech Venture Fund I and Stena FintechX Studio Fund I), AI / ML (Brett Sagan's PSTR AI II, $3.49 million), Space / Aerospace / Defense (Tim Holladay's SPVC 11, part of the Spacestation Investments family, $1.27 million), Biotech / Life Sciences (Zachary Firestone's Healthcare Management Tech I, $750,000), and a second Biotech / Life Sciences filing from Fund GP, LLC, the recurring SPV administration platform AngelLinx Intelligence has covered in multiple prior sessions, here filing on behalf of a healthcare-focused micro-fund rather than one of its usual generic-numbered series.

Whether today's modest improvement reflects a genuine one-day increase in sector-specific fund formation or simply a session where more filers happened to bother completing an optional field remains impossible to say from a single day's data alone. What is clear is that the underlying incentive structure has not changed: sector classification in this disclosure remains a loosely enforced, likely optional field, and a diversified or opportunistic fund manager filing paperwork focused on capital totals and offering terms has limited reason to also carefully classify a strategy by industry, particularly when a single label would oversimplify a genuinely multi-sector mandate.

Investors and founders using this dataset to track sector-level capital formation should continue treating any given day's sector-tagged total as a meaningful undercount rather than a comprehensive picture, and should watch the trend across many sessions rather than reading too much into any single day's improvement or decline. AngelLinx Intelligence will keep tracking this figure daily specifically to build that longer trend line, which a single day's snapshot cannot provide on its own.

The two Coral DeFi filings from Thomas McLaughlin are also worth flagging on their own terms, separate from the broader sector-tagging story. A $25.45 million LTD entity and a $19.36 million LP entity, both tagged Fintech / Crypto / Web3, follow the same genuine-split signature described in Article 2: two different dollar figures rather than one repeated across sibling entities, consistent with an onshore and offshore structure each tracking its own distinct investor base rather than one shared total restated twice. That two of today's five Fintech / Crypto / Web3 filings come from a single signatory, while the other three each come from a different, unrelated manager, is itself a small data point in favor of reading today's sector uptick as at least partly genuine rather than an artifact of one large administrative filer happening to tag its filings more diligently than usual.

Stacking today's 8.77% against the 3.6% recorded the prior session gives a two-point trend line, which is too short to call a real shift on its own, but the direction is at least consistent with the broader theory AngelLinx Intelligence has offered in earlier sector-tagging coverage: that sector labeling tends to track the presence of larger, more institutional filers with dedicated legal and compliance teams who complete every optional field as a matter of process, rather than tracking any underlying change in how much sector-focused capital is actually being raised on a given day. Today's tagged total includes several filings well above $1 million, including the $1.7384 billion Realty Income vehicle and the $262.12 million Caro Real Estate Credit Fund, both plausibly filed with more administrative support than a typical sub-$1 million SPV. Whether that correlation between filing size and sector-tagging completeness holds up as a durable pattern, rather than a coincidence of this particular week's mix of filers, is exactly the kind of question a longer running dataset is built to answer.
