Fundamentum Partnership just filed its third fund with SEBI at Rs 2,200 crore, approximately $265 million, making it one of the largest dedicated early-stage VC funds in India focused on fintech and AI.
The fund was co-founded by Nandan Nilekani, the Infosys co-founder who built Aadhaar and the UPI payment stack. Nilekani is stepping down as a general partner with Fund III but is making his largest personal investment in the firm as anchor LP, and will continue advising portfolio companies. Day-to-day leadership passes to Prateek Jain, who has been with Fundamentum since inception, and fintech investor Mayank Kachhwaha.
The investment thesis for Fund III targets eight to ten companies building in consumer technology, fintech, and AI. Writing initial checks of approximately Rs 100 crore ($10.5 million) each. Kachhwaha built the fintech practice through Fund II, backing companies like FlexiLoans, Stable Money, Olyv, and TransBnk. The AI mandate expands that into infrastructure and application-layer AI companies.
Fundamentum also filed a parallel vehicle, Fundamentum Frontier Trust, with an AI-specific mandate and Rs 2,000 to 3,000 crore in AUM. The two funds together represent a coordinated bet that fintech and AI are the two defining investment categories in India's next growth phase.
The SEBI filing also includes JSW Ventures filing its third fund targeting Rs 450 crore for pre-Series A SaaS and platform companies. JSW Ventures, the corporate VC arm of the JSW Group, has previously delivered strong returns: Fund I generated 31.4% IRR with 3x corpus returns.
What this means for founders
For Indian founders building in fintech or AI, the combination of Fundamentum Fund III, Fundamentum Frontier, and JSW Ventures Fund III filing in the same week represents a material increase in institutionally-backed seed and Series A capital specifically seeking Indian companies. The check sizes, Rs 100 crore at Fundamentum, Rs 15-20 crore at JSW Ventures, cover the full range from early seed to Series A. This is a rare week of capital formation that expands the accessible institutional market for Indian founders meaningfully.
